Exploring Hiroshima’s future through case studies from other cities

Art Gallery Miyauchi is pleased to present a special satellite exhibition of “Hiroshima Founding District 2045—Reconstruction and Creative Innovation,” an initiative led by the Motomachi Project active in the Motomachi residential district of Naka Ward, Hiroshima City.
This exhibition serves as a sequel to the “Photo Exhibition: Districts in the Process of Reconstruction” held in August by the Motomachi Project. It has been restructured with a focus on “housing,” incorporating previously unpublished materials and newly gathered documentation.

The previous photo exhibition featured images focused on architecture and urban landscapes, offering a glimpse into the unique goals and conditions of post-war reconstruction efforts in Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Germany, Poland, and other areas. These photographs illustrated not only the recovery from war damage but also the evolution of buildings in response to post-war housing shortages and urban planning demands. Despite differing objectives and contexts, significant development took place across all these regions in the post-war period.

As we approach the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing next year, this exhibition aims to provide an opportunity to reflect on how perspectives and historical contexts have shaped urban and housing environments and to explore what the future of Hiroshima’s urban landscape might hold, drawing inspiration from the experiences of other cities.
